  1. The "Yamato" was the the biggest battleship ever built.  It displaced 64,170 tons and was armed with nine 18.1 inch guns.  It was built in flagrant violation of the international naval limitations treaties in August of 1940.  The Yamato was sunk in Okinawa during an air attack in August 1944.
